Cuetzalan: “Place of Quetzal birds”

Hello everyone!!!

I hadn’t written because I wasn’t in México City, I really sorry. However, here is something that I want to share with you.

This holiday I made a trip to Cuetzalan and I consider it as a beautiful town that you should visit. I will give you some information about this unique town to persuade you to go.

Cuetzalan, “Place of Quetzal birds”, is a Nahuatl town set in the hills in the north of Puebla and it is located in the Sierra Norte region. The local natives are still wearing their traditional clothes and speaking their native language. Since Cuetzalan has conserved many of its traditions and natural beauty, it was named as “Pueblo Mágico” in 2002.

The town center is characterized by rustic buildings, handicraft markets, little stores and an antique church dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi. In front of the church the “Fliers” performance, a religious ritual to honor the sun, takes place (unfortunately I couldn’t see this amazing presentation). If you want to get some fun there are some restaurants, cafés, pubs and nightclubs

A few kilometers away from the town there is an archaeological site called Yohualichan that means “House of the Night”, it was founded by Totonacos in about 400 A.D. The pyramids were built in the same way as Tajin. Yohualichan is a nice place to visit, the tour doesn’t take a lot of time so you could go and take lunch there.

The town is surrounded by jungle and there you can find waterfalls and caves. Cuetzalan has a large network of caves where you can find stalactites and stalagmites. I recommend you to take a trip to these natural attractions. In the center of the town there is a small travel agency that organizes trips to the waterfalls, the pyramids and the caves. I took one to visit a small waterfall and a large cave at night. It was a great experience because I had never been in a cave hearing how the water falls to create stalactites and stalagmites. Also being in the middle of the jungle at night is something that you should experience, hearing all the creatures that are surrounding you is amazing.

  1. Wow, it sounds like a wonderful place! I'm glad YOU did something on the holidays Elisa because everyone else in the class just stayed home!!

I went to Papantla in December, which has also been designated a "Pueblo Mágico", and saw the "Voladores". I don't think we call them Flyers in English - there isn't really an English term for them. It was really delightful. I also recommend Papantla ... but I think that Cuetzalán might be a little closer to Mexico City!
